The Key to Music Education

Musical proficiency is often defined as the ability to perform a dramatic and moving piece of music in front of a flabbergasted audience.  Commendable as it is, musical proficiency can only offer a student temporary satisfaction for his or her gifts and talents.

A truly fulfilling musical education is, not only one that prepares a child for performance, but one that ultimately points a student to the glory and magnificence of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Music, after all, was created by Him and for Him.  “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.  Colossians 1:16″

This certainly does not indicate that a monastic musical education is ideal.  What we call sacred and holy should not be stereotyped with solemn, chanting choirs and candlelit services.  On the contrary, the study of music includes the study of beauty, order, and excellence.  The Psalms say, Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy… Splendor and majesty are before Him, Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary….Great are the works of the LordThey are studied by all who delight in them.” (Ps. 33:3; 96:6) A Christian music education is rich, abundant, and full of life.

Whether or not your child has the potential for being a prodigy, the value of a Christian education far outweighs any concert performance.  A regenerated heart can do nothing other than worship its Creator with all of its heart, soul, mind, and strength – and that cannot be purchased by any human means.
