Royal Conservatory of Music

What is it?

There are two separate exams: Practical and Theory. Practical exams test students on a wider range of musical skills including:

  • Performance
  • Sight Reading
  • Ear Training
  • Technique

 

The highest score is 100. The Passing score is 60. Click here for a video sampling of the Practical Exam.

Starting at Level 5, students can take Theory Exams combined with their Performance Exams to earn certificates that they can put on their college portfolios. Many colleges recognize these certificates as signs of great accomplishment on the part of the student.

Many high schools and middles schools also recognize these exams as credit for electives. More info here.

Price

  • Books – Books can be $50 and up depending on the level and if the books can be purchased on sale.
  • Examinations – Royal Conservatory is a very professional organization ensuring the highest quality for their customers. Therefore, fees are a bit higher than most piano competitions and Festival.
