Meet the Teacher

Aeryn Frusher
Art Teacher
Hey y’all! I’m Aeryn Hood (soon to be Aeryn Frusher in August!!), a fine artist (and future Scientific Illustrator) inspired by the beauty of the natural world. I recreate flora and fauna in watercolor, gouache, and pen & ink.
During my middle and high school years, I had the wonderful opportunity to explore Upstate New York and enjoyed a membership at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Inspired by the sight of a Blue Jay along a trail, the pitcher plants, and the animals at the zoo I volunteered at, I began to take more of an interest in the world around me. In addition to these experiences, I also grew up watching David Attenborough’s Planet Earth. I began drawing what I was observing. I continued to take science and art classes in high school and am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. To become a Scientific Illustrator, I am also completing an online Natural Science Illustration certificate through the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
I often begin my work by investigating my subject and taking, or gathering, as many reference photos as I can. I study each angle and start creating a rough sketch, adding in each detail as I go. After my pencil sketches are completed, I add in color with either gouache or watercolor. If I choose not to use one of those materials, I typically use a stipple technique in pen & ink. This technique utilizes dots to represent shadows and highlights. I have three main styles of art (gallery, technical, and educational art), all with different purposes.
I hope to create beautiful illustrations of the natural world that inspire wonder and awe in every generation. These illustrations are useful tools in primary and secondary education, research papers and presentations, medical offices, and anywhere scientific concepts can be conveyed by drawings. I hope that my work will inspire you to continue exploring the incredible world around us and the processes that occur in it!
