Royal Conservatory of Music

What is it?

The Royal Conservatory Exams are music exams which are academically recognized in North America and many other countries. There are two separate exams: Practical and Theory.

Practical Exams

The practical exam tests students on a wider range of musical skills including:

  • Performance
  • Sight Reading
  • Ear Training
  • Technique

The highest score is 100. The Passing score is 60. Click here for a video sampling of the Practical Exam.

Theory Exams

Starting at Level 5, students can take Theory Exams. Most of my students opt not to take this exam. But, if students want to participate, I can prepare him or her for this specific exam.

If they score well on the theory and the practical exams, students earn certificates that they can put on their college portfolios. Many colleges recognize these certificates as signs of great accomplishment on the part of the student.

Many high schools and middles schools also recognize these exams as credit for electives. More info here.

Remote or In-Person

The links provided below contain details about “in-person” exams, which have specific registration dates. There is an option to do “remote” exams via Zoom, which can be scheduled any time throughout the year. In-person is recommended. But, remote is more convenient due to location and time restraints.

When

Exams are taken after the completion of all requirements in a particular level. A student can complete levels at their own pace (ex: one level per year… or two levels per year). Click here for details on registration deadlines and examination dates.

Where

The best location for the Charlotte area is Columbia, SC. But, there are many options to choose from. The Columbia location tends to be open for the Spring exams, but not always for the winter exams. Click here to see the full range of options available to students.

Price

  • Books – Books can be $50 and up depending on the level and if the books can be purchased on sale. Each student will need at least two books: Repertoire and Etude. You can get an idea for the cost of the books here.

Cheaper Option

If you would like to have an exam, but are NOT needing it for your college portfolio, students can inquire with me about having a cheaper evaluation with a local piano teacher who is not associated with the program.
